Rites held for John Humphrey

John William Humphrey was born March 4, 1937 in Luther, Oklahoma. He departed this life and entered Heaven on January 23, 2021 in Oklahoma City at the age of 83.

John graduated from Wellston High School in 1957. He played varsity basketball and baseball. He also served in the United States Marine Corps. After graduation he married Joyce Wade and they were happily married for 62 years. John and Joyce started their family and lived in Wellston until 1968. John and Joyce moved to Allen, Oklahoma with their family where John worked as a Plant Operator for Sun Oil Company. In 1979, John and Joyce moved back to John’s home town of Wellston, Oklahoma.

John was a member of the Wellston Lions Club, as well as serving on the Wellston School Board for several years. John retired from Sun Oil Company in 1993 after working for 33 years. They enjoyed many years of camping at the lake with his family and they still carry on that tradition today. John always enjoyed a good fish fry during those many lake trips. John also enjoyed bluegrass festivals, traveling, and watching sporting events for their children and grandchildren. John was a member of First Baptist Church of Wellston for many years where he spent his spare time making repairs and maintaining general upkeep for his church home.

John is preceded in death by his parents Bill and Francis Humphrey and his brothers Robert Lee, James, Herman, Ted, and Rusty Humphrey, as well as one granddaughter, Amber Franklin.

Survivors include his siblings Wayne Humphrey of Harrah, Mary Payne of Wellston, Ann Prince of Edmond, and Warren (Rude) and Sue Humphrey of Wellston; and sisters-in-law Carol Humphrey of Edmond, and Linda Humphrey of Guthrie. He is also survived by his children Terry and Janet Humphrey of Wellston, Tammy and Steve Spitler of Aledo, Texas, Tawnya and Rex Franklin of Wellston, Tresea and Tony Bailey of Wellston, and Tony Humphrey of Wellston; he leaves nine grandchildren, Crystal Hull of Wellston, Ashley (Bailey) and Chance Goodman of Chandler, Kayla (Bailey) and Matt Baldwin of Wellston, Kaleb and Jocelyn Humphrey of Crescent, Daniel Spilter of Aledo, Texas, Kelsey (Humphrey) and Austin Mason of Chandler, Molly Spilter of Sierra Blanca, Texas, and Breawna Humphrey and Lacey Humphrey of Wellston; nine great-grandchildren, three great-grandchildren arriving in May and many other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held at the First Baptist Church in Wellston on Wednesday, January 27 th ​ , at 2:00 p.m.; interment service followed at the Wellston cemetery.
