Sheriff’s Office warn citizens of new scam targeting Hunt County citizens

The Hunt County Sheriff’s Office has received notification of a new scam targeting the citizens of Hunt County Texas.

The Sheriff’s Office received calls today that unknown persons are attempting to defraud individuals who are registered sex offenders that reside in this County.  The suspects attempt to inform the victim that they are not in compliance and that they must put several hundred dollars on a “Google” or “Google Play” card or they will be arrested.  These individuals contacted our sex offender compliance section and alerted us of this situation and each of the offenders have properly registered and met their requirements according to State law.

Sheriff Meeks wants everyone to understand that no one from the Sheriff’s Office will call and request a person to put monies on any type of card for any violation of State Law or anything else for that matter.

“This scam surfaces from time to time with different targets each time.  As I recall a couple of years ago scammers were targeting elderly citizens with scare tactics. These people go after segments in society they think will be scared to report the crime,” said Hunt County Sheriff Meeks.
